Year 1 have been consolidating high, low and going upwards- going downwards. They loved using angklungs for this and so did I.
Our focus song was:
Elevator, won’t you take me, 1-2-3-4-5
Elevator, won’t you take me, 5-4-3-2-1

(I found the chant of this at the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra website and made up the (obvious) tune myself).
After singing, showing pitch direction and using a body scale, we used angklungs to play the number part of the song.
Angklungs are from SE Asia (easily found in Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia) and are made from bamboo which shakes against a wooden frame.
They can be used in a similar way to handbells – each angklung plays one note.
Students needed to listen for their turn and in most cases they sang the rest of the song too. They related the size of the angklung to the pitch it made, although that didn’t always work because some were at different octaves. We’ll fix that when we get new angklungs. They are fairly cheap to buy here in Thailand.
